Available on a first come first serve basis.   About Buckfast Bees and why we have chosen to breed from them. BR ADAM’S LEGACY Br Adam Kehrle was in charge of Buckfast Abbey’s bees from 1919 to 1992. In the early 20th century bee populations were being decimated by Isle of Wight disease, the acarine parasitic mite that invaded the bees' tracheal tubes and shortened their lives, killing off thousands of colonies in the British Isles. Br Adam founded the Buckfast strain and introduced a method of queen breeding based upon purity of stock, controlled mating, precise records and judicious selection. An extremely popular choice for beekeepers due to their many favourable qualities The Buckfast bees do not run on the frames, fly in cool weather conditions and are not prone to stealing, are excellent honey producers and extremely gentle friendly behaviour (some authorities rate them higher than the Italian bees in most categories). Good natured bees great for garden apiaries. Lack of swarming tendencies and hygienic hive conditions. Br Adam never sought to keep the Buckfast bee for himself, and that’s why we are pleased to carry on his work today.
